[ARCHIVED] PRESS RELEASE - US 60 OVERPASS WORK SET TO BEGIN IN CANYON

AMARILLO – The overpass from eastbound US 60 to northbound US 87 in Canyon will close the week of September 10 for a reconstruction project.

Beginning next Tuesday, September 4th, workers will be realigning the access from eastbound US 60 to southbound US 87 into Canyon, which has been shut down due to the landscaping project nearing completion near the City of Canyon. That intersection, which is currently a curve accessing US 87, will be made into a ninety-degree intersection with US 87. Once the intersection realignment is complete, the new intersection will open, and the overpass will be closed and demolished.

Access to both northbound and southbound US 87 from eastbound US 60 will be at the newly-aligned intersection. Concrete barriers will be removed to allow access to northbound US 87, and a temporary stoplight will be in place. Once the US 60 overpass is rebuilt and opened to traffic, the concrete barriers will be put back in place, and a stop sign will replace the temporary stoplights.

The permanent stop sign will control traffic accessing southbound US 87 into Canyon once the US 60 overpass project is complete. The newly-aligned intersection will be safer for motorists exiting US 60 by eliminating the need for a driver to look over their shoulder to see oncoming traffic.

The new overpass will cost about $1 million to build and should open by mid-November, weather permitting.
